This workshop conducted by Professor Shirley Geok-lin Lim will focus on Singapore English-language literature in historical and sociological contexts, with a concentration on contemporary writing; and including strategies for teaching expressive writing, academic writing and critical thinking skills alongside texts.
Texts used in the workshop will be from the book Writing Singapore: A Historical Anthology, National University of Singapore Press, 2009 and other selected contemporary texts. The book Writing Singapore: A Historical Anthology, will be provided free to workshop participants.
A.INTRODUCTION
- Introduction of workshop participants: group formation
- Introduction to one-day workshop: Common Goals, New Questions: group contribution
- The place of history, imagination, literary genre (narrative, poetry, drama): group field assignment
- Definitions of nation, subject, identity, class, race/ethnicity, gender: group theoretical lens
- Close reading, reader response, critical thinking and literary terms, and student expressive writing: group presentation

- Pre-British annals; British pre-Independence imaginaries; and local pre-Independence voices: Straits Chinese (p.31-37, 1897-1907)

About the Trainer: Shirley Geok-lin Lim
Professor Shirley Geok-lin Lim, University of California, Santa Barbara and Ngee Ann Kongsi Distinguished Visiting Professor, University Scholars Program, NUS: October 2012. Among her honors, Lim was awarded the Multiethnic Literatures of the United States (MELUS) 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award, the UCSB Faculty Research Lecture Award, and the Chair Professorship of English at the University of Hong Kong, as well as the University of Western Australia Distinguished Lecturer award, Fulbright Distinguished Lecturer award, and J.T. Stewart Hedgebrook award.
Registration Details
Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis and workshop fees must be paid before the workshop. If the minimum number of participants is not met for the class, the organisers will inform all participants about possible postponement and cancellation, two weeks before the workshop date.
Cancellation & Substitution
The workshop can be cancelled or postponed two weeks before the workshop date if the minimum number of participants is not met. Participants will be fully refunded for workshops cancelled by us.
Participants who are unable to attend a workshop they have registered for are to inform us of the reason two weeks before the workshop date. They will be fully refunded in the event of extenuating and mitigating circumstances (E.g. illness, bereavement, accidents) . Those who inform us up to five (5) working days before the workshop date will receive a 50% refund. Participants can also attend another course at the same value within the same year.
Upon registration, you are deemed to have read and understood the cancellation, withdrawal and substitution policy and accept the terms contained therein.
