“Make the manuscript the finest it can be” — with advanced copyediting and proofreading.

In this intensive, two-day workshop, participants will work at an advanced level with a variety of texts —fiction and non-fiction — and hone their techniques for ensuring that each element of the text is the shape it should be; that language is elegant and appropriate, that ideas are expressed as clearly as possible, and the narrative flows as it should.

This is a practical workshop with many examples and opportunities for participants to work in small groups, and have the opportunity to present to the group, as well as opportunities for collegial and individual work and practice.

Course Outline

  • Analysing and identifying challenges in texts: Checklists and exercises
  • Audience and purpose: Aligning text to appropriate markets
  • Macro- and micro-editing: Balance and coverage
  • The editor’s role and responsibilities beyond ‘pure’ editing or proofing
  • Keeping track: The editor’s toolkit for clarity, consistency and concision
  • Balancing the elements: Being advocate for the public, publisher and author
  • Communicating well: Becoming a diplomat and a choreographer!
  • Proofreading techniques: Checklists and exercises (individual and pair work)
  • Exercising judgement: When to change and when to hold back.
  • Question and answer sessions each day.

You’ll be provided with checklists, exercises and suggested edits for the sample texts.

There is a question and answer session each day.

This advanced level workshop will include group work, one-on-one support and feedback on editing and proofreading practice.
