Having an understanding of indexing and how it fits into the editorial process is an essential skill for editors. Whether you are a new/trainee editor or an editor with 1–3 years’ indexing experience, this two-day course will be of considerable benefit to you.

  • Editing an index – checklist
  • Editing the faulty index
  • Advanced indexing techniques/Techniques for special situations (participants will be encouraged to suggest indexing problems they have come across)

About the trainer: Max McMaster

Max McMaster

Max McMaster has been a full-time freelance book indexer for the past 24 years, working on more than 2350 indexes covering a range of subjects including the sciences, business, environment, social sciences and government, as well as general trade titles. He lectures on indexing to editing and publishing students at several Australian universities. Max is also an instructor for the virtual indexing course run through the University of California Berkeley Extension. He is a life member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of indexers (ANZSI) and has been awarded the ANZSI Medal for book indexing on three occasions. He lives in Melbourne, Australia.

Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis and workshop fees must be paid before the workshop. If the minimum number of participants is not met for the class, the organisers will inform all participants about possible postponement and cancellation of workshop, two weeks before the workshop date.

All ALAP workshops serve tea-breaks and provide course handouts.

Cancellation & Substitution

The workshop can be cancelled or postponed two weeks before the workshop date if the minimum number of participants is not met. Participants will be fully refunded for workshops cancelled by us.

Participants who are unable to attend a workshop they have registered for are to inform us of the reason two weeks before the workshop date. They will be fully refunded in the event of extenuating and mitigating circumstances ( E.g. illness, bereavement, accidents) . Those who inform us later than two weeks before the workshop date will receive a 50 % refund. Participants can also opt to attend another course at the same value within the same year.

Upon registration, you are deemed to have read and understood the cancellation, withdrawal and substitution policy and accept the terms contained therein.
