SYNOPSIS

In this two day workshop, UK Copyright and Rights Consultant Lynette Owen will cover key aspects of copyright and licensing in the publishing world including the role of copyright as the framework for rights trading and the importance of the author-publisher contract.

Next is a session on the rationale for buying rights, sources of information on potential titles, making contact with rightsholders and the practicalities of negotiating terms and finalising a contract for the purchase of rights.

The final session will cover the promotion and sale of rights, whether the titles originate in Singapore or are represented by the Singapore office, covering what resources are needed to provide the service and practical advice on finding suitable licensees and negotiating terms. The importance of book fairs is stressed throughout.

Day 1: August 3rd

  • Copyright as the framework for rights trading
  • International copyright conventions (Berne, UCC & the WIP Treaty)
  • Key features of copyright legislation in the UK, the USA and Singapore
  • Piracy and unauthorised editions
  • The author-publisher relationship – direct or via a literary agent?

  •  Why buy rights?
  • Sources of information
  • Locating the rightsholder and making the initial contact
  • Book fairs: which are the best for rights business?
  • Planning for book fairs as a rights buyer; prearranging appointment with rights staff; conducting appointments; assessing projects
  • Negotiating terms: licence or coedition deal (more common for illustrated books); clarification re any third party copyright material; purchase of duplicate production material
  • Model contract for purchase of rights: English language reprint
  • Model contract for purchase of rights: translation rights
  • After the contract: administration procedures

SELLING RIGHTS

  • Why sell rights?
  •  Do you have all the rights you require? 
  • What resources do you have to sell rights?
  • Working direct, via subagents, or a combination of both?

About the Trainer: Lynette Owen

LYNETTE OWEN is a copyright and rights consultant based in the UK.  She has worked in the field of rights at Cambridge University Press, Pitman Publishing, Marshall Cavendish and then at Longman Group (more recently Pearson Education) where she held the post of Copyright Director.  She regularly lectures about rights on publishing degree courses in the UK and also runs training courses in the UK and abroad, most recently in  Brazil, Poland, India, Malaysia and the Middle East.  She is the General Editor of, and a contributor to, Clark's Publishing Agreements: A Book of Precedents 9/e (Bloomsbury Professional, 2013) and is the author of Selling Rights 7/e (Routledge, 2014).  In 2003 she was awarded the London Book Fair Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2009 she was awarded an OBE in the New Year Honours for services to publishing and international trade.

Minimum – Maximum Number of Participants: 10 – 30 pax

Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis and workshop fees must be paid before the workshop. If the minimum number of participants is not met for the class, the organisers will inform all participants about possible postponement and cancellation, two weeks before the workshop date.

Cancellation & Substitution

The workshop can be cancelled or postponed two weeks before the workshop date if the minimum number of participants is not met. Participants will be fully refunded for workshops cancelled by us.

Participants who are unable to attend a workshop they have registered for are to inform us of the reason two weeks before the workshop date. They will be fully refunded in the event of extenuating and mitigating circumstances (E.g. illness, bereavement, accidents) . Those who inform us up to five (5) working days before the workshop date will receive a 50% refund. Participants can also attend another course at the same value within the same year.
