If you want to write a memorable and moving story about a special person in your life, this workshop is for you! Local writer Katherine Seow, author of ‘Seven generations and counting’ will teach you how to make this special person come alive in your very own words. This workshop will focus on honing your skills in seeing, listening, writing and sharing what you’re written to become a better memoir writer!
1. Introduction
- Writing exercise – ‘Same vs Special Writing’
2. Elements of a “story”: 5 Ws and 1H
- Exploring the “who, why, what, where and when” elements of a story
- Working through these elements using material from Seven generations and counting
- Choosing how you will tell the story?
- Choice of voice i.e. narrator, first person or third person
3. Writing exercises
- Several writing exercises by each participant
- Submission of the “best” piece of writing from each participant (anonymous submissions possible)
- Reading out anonymous submissions to the class for feedback
4. Drafting an Outline
- Using the 5Ws and 1H method, participants draft an outline of their story -What roles does this person play?
- Why is this role the focus?
- Who else is involved?
- When and where do significant life events take place?
5. Drafting a Work Plan
- With the outline they have prepared, participants draft a work plan for their story

- Discussing the format the family story can take
- Sharing personal experience

About the Trainer: Katherine Seow
Katherine Seow graduated from the University of Glasgow with a Masters in Literature (Creative Writing). Seven generations and counting – the story of Pang Siew Peck, a family history, is her first published book. Material from the book is the subject of WRITE TO REMEMBER, a talk cum workshop she conducted in July for Singapore’s National Heritage Board at Heritagefest 2012. Her second book, a mystery entitled Double Take was shortlisted for the Scholastic Asia Book Award and received a runner-up commendation. Prior to writing fulltime, Katherine worked as a contributing writer for The Edge Singapore, a financial weekly. She also writes and edits occasional pieces for her church magazine, Uphill.
Registration Details
Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis and workshop fees must be paid before the workshop. If the minimum number of participants is not met for the class, the organisers will inform all participants about possible postponement and cancellation, two weeks before the workshop date.
Cancellation & Substitution
The workshop can be cancelled or postponed two weeks before the workshop date if the minimum number of participants is not met. Participants will be fully refunded for workshops cancelled by us.
Participants who are unable to attend a workshop they have registered for are to inform us of the reason two weeks before the workshop date. They will be fully refunded in the event of extenuating and mitigating circumstances (E.g. illness, bereavement, accidents) . Those who inform us up to five (5) working days before the workshop date will receive a 50% refund. Participants can also attend another course at the same value within the same year.
Upon registration, you are deemed to have read and understood the cancellation, withdrawal and substitution policy and accept the terms contained therein.
