Developing a Reading Culture in Schools
INTRODUCTION
A major challenge facing English Language teachers in Singapore today is getting reluctant students to become spontaneous and proficient readers.
There are several reasons why students are reluctant readers but a major contributory factor is an inadequate introduction into the world of books and the joys of reading. Nevertheless, English language teachers can motivate the students to become avid and proficient readers.
In view of this, this workshop aims to provide teachers with information on how this can be achieved.
COURSE OUTLINE
The introductory part of the workshop will focus on processes involved in proficient reading. Following this, a description will be given of a reading programme in a local Singapore Primary School implemented with the aim of developing readers. The final part of the workshop will focus on a central part of the programme namely, the various techniques that was used to develop students’ interest in books.
Apart from comprehensive notes, a hands-on demonstration of each of these techniques will be given with authentic materials so that teachers can readily use these techniques in their respective classrooms to develop students into readers.
About the Trainer: Dr Chitra Shegar
Dr Chitra Shegar completed her PhD in the University of Western Australia. During her stint there, she conducted seminars and summer courses in the University of Western Australia and served as a language consultant.
In Singapore, she has taught in secondary and tertiary institutions. She has also conducted inservice teacher training courses in RELC for 5 years. The courses taught included Reading, Writing and Grammar.
As a language consultant she conducted workshops and seminars for language teachers and parents in Singapore. In addition, enrichment programmes were also carried out for students as part of her language consultancy projects. She has also presented papers and conducted workshops in several international
conferences.
Dr Chitra Shegar is currently with the English Language & Literature Academic Group at National Institute of Education, Singapore.
Registration Details
Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis and workshop fees must be paid before the workshop. If the minimum number of participants is not met for the class, the organisers will inform all participants about possible postponement and cancellation, two weeks before the workshop date.
Cancellation & Substitution
The workshop can be cancelled or postponed two weeks before the workshop date if the minimum number of participants is not met. Participants will be fully refunded for workshops cancelled by us.
Participants who are unable to attend a workshop they have registered for are to inform us of the reason two weeks before the workshop date. They will be fully refunded in the event of extenuating and mitigating circumstances (E.g. illness, bereavement, accidents) . Those who inform us up to five (5) working days before the workshop date will receive a 50% refund. Participants can also attend another course at the same value within the same year.
Upon registration, you are deemed to have read and understood the cancellation, withdrawal and substitution policy and accept the terms contained therein.
